What is Deviation of the Nasal Septum?

Description of the disease

Deviation of the nasal septum is a condition in which the nasal septum (the partition between the nostrils) deviates from its normal position. This can cause breathing problems and lead to other unpleasant symptoms.

Classification

  • Acquired deviation

Symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
  • Frequent headaches

Causes

Deviation of the nasal septum can be caused by genetic factors as well as external traumas such as blows and injuries.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made using X-rays, CT scans, and rhinoscopy (examination of the nasal cavity with a special endoscope tube).

Treatment

Treatment can be conservative (prescribing medications, physiotherapeutic procedures) or surgical (correcting the nasal septum).

Prevention

  • Avoiding traumatic situations that can lead to deviation of the nasal septum
  • Timely treatment of upper respiratory tract diseases

Doctor

Treatment and diagnosis are provided by an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor).
