What is Thrush?

Description of the disease

Thrush, or vaginal candidiasis, is a fungal inflammatory disease that most often affects women aged 16 to 45. It is caused by the fungus Candida albicans. The disease can occur in women of any age, as well as in men.

  • Acute variant;
  • Recurrent variant;
  • Chronic variant.

Symptoms

  • Itching in the vaginal and vulvar area;
  • Discharge with a characteristic sour odor;
  • Redness and swelling of the vagina;
  • Painful urination;
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.

Causes

Weakened immunity, taking antibiotics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, diabetes, stress, overeating, improper vaginal hygiene, wearing synthetic underwear, excessive consumption of sweets and beer.

Diagnostics

  • General blood and urine tests;
  • Examination of a vaginal swab;
  • Bacteriological examination of discharge;
  • Ultrasound of the pelvic organs.

Treatment

Antifungal therapy (drugs for vaginal use and systemic drugs), local application of antifungal agents, rational anti-inflammatory treatment, correction of microflora disorders, taking probiotics.

Prevention

  • Observance of hygiene rules;
  • Avoidance of stressful situations;
  • Weight control;
  • Adherence to the principles of a healthy lifestyle;
  • Avoidance of wearing tight and synthetic underwear.
