Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction
Description of the disease
Nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) is a condition in which the nasolacrimal duct is blocked or closed, leading to difficulty in drainage of tears and mucus from the nose.
Classification
- Congenital NLDO - occurs from birth due to congenital anomalies of the nasolacrimal duct.
- Acquired NLDO - develops as a result of inflammatory processes, trauma, or tumors of the nasolacrimal duct.
Symptoms
- Constant tearing.
- Nasal congestion.
- Feeling of pressure in the nose area.
- Inflammation of the eyelids and periorbital area.
Causes
Causes of NLDO can include congenital anomalies, inflammatory processes (such as sinusitis), trauma, tumors, and scarring in the area of the nasolacrimal duct.
Diagnosis
For the diagnosis of NLDO, a doctor may use X-rays, computed tomography, or special cameras for video monitoring of the patency of the nasolacrimal duct. Special tests with the passage of colored solution through the nasolacrimal duct may also be conducted.
Treatment
Treatment of NLDO may include conservative methods (nasal massage, nasal irrigation), medical therapy, or surgical intervention to restore the patency of the nasolacrimal duct.
Prevention
Prevention of NLDO includes timely treatment of inflammatory diseases of the nose and adjacent areas, as well as prevention of injuries and wound healing after surgeries.
