What is Orchitis?

Description of the disease

Orchitis is inflammation of the testicles, usually caused by infections such as viruses or bacteria.


  • Viral (epidemic) orchitis
  • Bacterial orchitis
  • Traumatic orchitis
  • Idiopathic orchitis


  • Swelling and enlargement of one or both testicles
  • Pain and tenderness in the testicular area
  • Feeling of heaviness or pressure in the scrotum
  • Fever


Main causes of orchitis include viral and bacterial infections, trauma, or certain medical procedures.


The diagnosis is usually made based on symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory tests.


Treatment of orchitis includes taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection, painkillers, and plenty of fluids.


Prevention includes proper hygiene, protection from trauma, and prevention of infections.


In case of symptoms of orchitis, it is advisable to consult a urologist or venereologist.
