Valerian roots are often prepared in tea form, and in doing so they should not be prepared with boiling water, as this may drive off the lighter oils. Valerian root extract has fewer side effects than prescription sleep medications. Valerian has often been used in complementary and alternative medicine for its sedative properties. Currently, the herb is mainly used for insomnia.
